ATLANTA -1.5 (+105) 3.5 UNITS Select
POWER PLAY
First Pitch: 7:10 pm est
Listed Pitchers: Nolasco / Vazquez
Marlins: Nolasco held the Mets to three runs on four hits over seven innings while striking out seven. Despite the solid performance, Nolasco’s outing did not get off to a good start. In the second inning, the Mets strung together three hits, the last being a Jeff Francoeur three-run homer, but the right-hander was able to hold New York to just one hit over his final five innings.
Braves: The right-hander is coming off a dominating performance against the Nationals last Friday night. He threw a three-hitter in a complete-game victory over Washington. Vazquez now has won four straight games and continues to be one of the National League’s most solid performers. The Braves need this from him to keep up any hopes of pulling out the Wild Card berth.
TEXAS / LAA ANGELS OVER 9 3.5 UNITS
First Pitch: 10:05 pm est
Listed Pitchers: Holland / Davis
Rangers: A tweak in his mechanics and a little bit of grit carried the 22-year-old left-hander to his first victory since Aug. 20 — he had gone 0-5 with a 12.38 ERA in that span — in an 8-3 win over Tampa Bay in his last start. Holland only worked five innings, but battled back for two scoreless innings after the Rays hit him for three in the third. Holland said pitching coach Mike Maddux had noticed he was falling forward in his delivery and got Holland to work on staying centered, allowing him to attack the plate and get ahead of hitters.
Angels: Angels manager Mike Scioscia isn’t tipping his hand, saying only that he had another surprise. It figures to be Bell, a rookie right-hander with a power arm, or Matt Palmer, who has been a boost to the staff as both a starter and reliever in going 10-2 with a 4.17 ERA in 38 appearances, 12 as a starter. Bell was impressive in his first two starts, winning his second outing in Cleveland, but several rough outings have inflated his ERA.

PHILLY -1.5 (-105) 4 UNITS
Power Play
First Pitch: 8:05 pm est
Listed Pitchers: Lee / Parra
Phillies: Lee pitched just four innings Sunday against the Braves at Turner Field, but only because of a 1 hour, 51 minute rain delay. He had allowed five hits and one run to that point. Lee wanted to run back out there, but the Phillies told him it wasn’t worth the risk. It made sense. While it would have been nice to have Lee pitch a few more innings, they want to make sure he is healthy for the postseason. He is 7-2 with a 2.65 ERA since he joined the Phillies on July 29.
Brewers: This is Yovani Gallardo’s slot and the Brewers will give it to Parra, who has not started since developing a stiff neck and exiting a Sept. 8 start against the Cardinals. Parra declared himself “100 percent healthy” after throwing a series of bullpen sessions this week and will have two starts to author a positive finish to his disappointing season. He has the highest ERA of any Major League pitcher with at least 80 innings.
ANGELS -1.5 (+100) 3.5 UNITS
First Pitch: 10:05 pm est
Listed Pitchers: Gonzales / Weaver
Athletics: Gonzalez couldn’t get out of the fourth inning for the second straight start. He’s given up eight earned runs and 10 hits over his last 6 2/3 innings. He’s made one start against the Angels, giving up four runs and walking five in three innings on Aug. 27, 2008, in Anaheim.
Angels: Weaver gets an extra day between starts because of the day off, and if anyone has earned it, he’s the guy. The only Angels starter not to miss a turn, Weaver is coming off a solid six innings in Texas, yielding three earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four men. He reached 200 innings for the first time in his four seasons, a testament to his increased stamina and endurance. Weaver has been stellar at home (9-2, 2.89 in 16 starts) and has a strange history with the Athletics, going 2-2 in nine outings despite an excellent ERA of 2.93.

DETROIT -1.5 (-135) 4.5 UNITS
Power Play
First Pitch: 7:10 pm est
Listed Pitchers: Verlander / Carrasco
Tigers: Don’t let the numbers from his last outing fool you. Verlander took a one-run game into the eighth inning before a fly ball lost against the roof of the Metrodome for a double helped spring open a five-run Twins rally. Verlander hit 101 mph on his 127th and final pitch of that outing, a Jason Kubel bloop single that brought in two runs and extended Verlander’s winless streak to three consecutive starts. He won’t get an extra day of rest after throwing 128 pitches Saturday, so his pitch count might have to be watched closely.
Indians: Carrasco, three starts into his Major League career, continues to give up big hits at bad times. He allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts over six innings in a loss to the Royals on Sept. 13. Carrasco, a key starting pitching prospect acquired in the Cliff Lee trade, has now given up 15 earned runs in 14 total innings over three starts. He’s been tagged for six home runs, as he’s had trouble getting movement on his fastball.
BOSTON -1.5 (-130) 4 UNITS
First Pitch: 8:10 pm est
Listed Pitchers: Buchholz / Lerew
Red Sox: The wiry right-hander continues to come of age, firing one solid outing after another. Buchholz’s most recent start was a 3-1 victory over the Orioles, in which he gave up five hits and a run over six innings. Though Buchholz was hardly overpowering, striking out one, he found a way to get the job done. Buchholz has eight quality starts. Opponents are hitting .248 against him. Buchholz has pitched just once in his career against the Royals, taking the loss on a day he gave up seven hits and four runs over six innings.
Royals: Lerew was pulled up from Double-A Northwest Arkansas to fill an opening in the rotation, created by arm ailments to Kyle Davies and Dusty Hughes. Lerew went 10-6 with a 4.09 ERA in the Texas League and also was 2-0 with a 0.60 ERA in the playoffs. His Major League experience is 11 games with the Braves in 2005-07 including an 0-2 record in three starts. His last start was against the Red Sox in an Interleague game on May 19, 2007, at Fenway Park. Lerew lasted just two innings and was charged with three runs on five hits including homers by Kevin Youkilis and since-departed Julio Lugo.

First Pitch: 8:10 pm est
Listed Pitchers: Beckett / Hochevar
Red Sox: Beckett fanned seven over eight frames of three-run ball last Thursday in a no-decision against the Angels at Fenway Park. The ace righty has tossed 201 1/3 innings this season, his most in a single campaign since 2006. In three lifetime starts at Kauffman Stadium, Beckett is 2-0 with a 2.55 ERA.
Royals: Hochevar was marvelous on Friday night, registering his first career shutout in an 11-0 victory over the White Sox. Hochevar allowed three hits and just four baserunners, wiping away two of them thanks to double-play balls. He struck out five and issued one walk, throwing 105 pitches (76 strikes). It was Hochevar’s first victory since July 25, a span of 10 starts. Lifetime against the Red Sox, Hochevar is 1-2 with a 7.13 ERA in three starts.
ATLANTA -1.5 3 UNITS WINNER
First Pitch: 7:05 pm est
Listed Pitchers: Hudson / Pelfrey
Braves: Hudson retired the first 10 Phillies batters he faced on Friday night but was then damaged by the power of Ryan Howard, whose two homers accounted for the three runs the Braves right-hander allowed in seven innings. Four starts into his return from Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery, Hudson finds himself still searching for consistent control. Still, two blown saves are all that separate him from winning each of his first three starts.
Mets: Pelfrey was pedestrian his last time out, against the Nationals on Friday, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits in seven innings. Two of those eight hits were two-run home runs by Ryan Zimmerman and Josh Bard, respectively, which helped push Pelfrey’s record under .500 for the year. While Pelfrey’s career struggles against the Marlins have been well-documented, it’s actually the Braves who have given him the most trouble. In nine career games against Atlanta, Pelfrey is 2-4 with a 6.29 ERA — his second-highest ERA against a National League team. Pelfrey was battered around in his last start against the Braves, giving up a career-high nine earned runs in 4 1/3 innings in an 11-0 loss. In his only start against Atlanta at Citi Field, though, Pelfrey limited the Braves to two runs on six hits in seven innings. The lefties in the Braves’ lineup have excelled in their careers against Pelfrey, as Adam LaRoche is 4-for-4, Brian McCann is 11-for-23 with a home run and Chipper Jones is 6-for-15 with two long balls.
